Type Locality and Naming

By the Kulosye River, basin of the lower reaches of the Chatkal River, Chatkal Range. O.I. Sergunyukova, 1959 (382, p. 65). Stratotype on the watershed of the Kulosey and Chatkal rivers, Chatkal Range. In later works (439) by O.I. Sergun'kova, this term has been removed from usage.

Synonym: Kulosyin Suite, Кулосынская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Dark gray to black, medium- to thin-bedded, micritic, detrital limestones, often with clay admixture, characterized by numerous siliceous inclusions in the form of nodules, lenses, and less frequently, layers. Thickness 140-190m.

In the monograph (165), the K. suite on the southwestern slope of the Chatkal Range lies with angular unconformity on the dolomitic breccias of the Sukok Fm, with the lower part of the Tournaisian stage missing. Thickness from 0 to 300m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Akbulak-Carb-L Fm (Akbulak River, Mazar-Say) and Koksuy Fm (Koksu River) suites

Upper contact

It is also conformably overlain by the Kuylyuk Fm or Sargardon Fm, or by large biogenic mounds of the "Kulosey" type.

Regional extent

Chatkal Range, lower reaches of the Chatkal and Koksu rivers. Laterally to the northwest (Pskem Range, middle reaches of the Koksu River), the Kulosyn Fm gradually transitions to the limestones of the Taldybulak Fm.

Contains conodonts - Siphonodella quadruplicata (B. et M.), S. crenulata (Coop.), S. cooperi Hass., Gnathodus punctatus (Coop.); brachiopods - Palaeochoristites čatkalicus Dik., P. cinctus Keys., foraminifers - Endothyra latispiralis Lip., E. kosvensis Lip., E. turkestanica (B. et Yaf.).
